Stepping Up

So, last night I made a decision at work.

It's 5pm and there's an issue with something that is "not my job" area of work.

I basically COULD have just gone home and said screw it.

I didn't.  I stayed.  Why?  Because it's about going the extra mile.  It's about going slightly above and beyond to make sure that things are working.

But why go the extra mile?  Who cares.  Who the flip really cares!?

You should care.  Here's why... Because, I've learned in my 33 years of life that later on down the road, things are always going to refer back to the past.

Things ALWAYS come back around.  You might not think they do.  You might think what's done is done and the past is in the past... Well, news flash... Disney has misled you.  The past isn't in the past.

Last night I chose to stay an extra 3 and a half hours to help.  Guess what happened today?  There was an incident that relied on equipment I had assisted in fixing last night.  What happened today was directly related to the work I did last night.

If I had just blown it off last night and gone home... I wouldn't have been as prepared today to deal with things.

So, the next time you have the choice at work to, do more... Or do less... and it's entirely up to you, it's not your bossing saying you have to stay... No one is saying you have to stay...

Just consider the future.

My general saying when making most decisions is... Do that thing you REALLY don't want to do.  Because that usually ends up being the better choice.  The one out of your comfort zone.  The one where you have to go out in the rain to hit the gym.  The one where you have to stay a few extra hours when all you want to do is go home.  Again, you don't have to... But I find it just usually works out in your favor.

Go to sleep early when you want to stay up late.  Wake up early when you want to sleep in.  Make lunch the night before instead.  You know, that kind of stuff.

All I can say is it definitely helped me today to stay late for a few hours last night when I could have just said to heck with it and left.  It paid off big time.
